The Northern Netherlands is at the forefront of energy transition. For decades, the region has played a major role in the energy supply of the Netherlands and Western Europe. Now that the gas tap is closed, we are building a new system: clean, smart and future-proof. From green hydrogen to batteries and offshore wind - it's happening here.

In Eemshaven, everything comes together. With three power plants, a floating LNG terminal and international power cables, it is an important link in the European network. At the same time, companies, researchers and governments work together on new solutions, including at EnTranCe, Energy Academy Europe and the New Energy Coalition.

Projects like HEAVENN and BatteryNL make the Northern Netherlands a testing ground and pioneer in renewable energy. The knowledge and experience built up here is now being exported to countries such as Germany and Scandinavia.

Opportunities and challenges in the northern Netherlands

There are plenty of opportunities here for companies working on renewable energy, hydrogen technology, battery storage, systems integration or Power-to-X. After all, our region has a strong network, good infrastructure and plenty of room to test and scale up.

The energy transition brings challenges, of course. The power grid is filling up and technical professionals are in high demand. There are also still missing links in the chain. Think, for example, of companies that can supply ultrapure water, recycle batteries without incineration or drinking water or develop smart software for energy grids.

Anyone who settles here becomes part of a broad ecosystem and contributes directly to it. Whether you work with hydrogen, AI, smart storage or circular technology: your knowledge is needed to move forward.

More and more connections are emerging between sectors, which is great to see. For example, hydrogen is being used in chemistry, AI is contributing to smart grids and hydrogen applications are emerging in mobility. This is all coming together in the Northern Netherlands!
