Northern Netherlands as a center for water technology.

The Northern Netherlands is internationally known as the region for innovative water technology. With WaterCampus Leeuwarden as a central innovation hub, the region has a strong ecosystem in which companies, knowledge institutes and governments work together on groundbreaking technologies. Here, solutions are developed for water purification, reuse and circular water management.

Pioneers like NX Filtration, that nanofiltration commitment to more efficient water treatment, Paques Biomaterials, that bioplastics produces from wastewater, and Hydraloop, which recycles household water, show how technological innovation leads to concrete applications. Thanks to collaborations with Wetsus, the Centre of Expertise Water Technology (CEW) and the industry partners within Water Alliance, the northern Netherlands is growing into a leading center for sustainable water technology.

Opportunities and challenges in the northern Netherlands

Sustainable and smart water management is essential for the future. The Northern Netherlands is leading the way in this with innovations such as effluent treatment for reuse, the removal of micro-pollutants and the application of AI and machine learning. Thanks to strong collaborations within WaterCampus and an active business network, the sector continues to develop.

Yet there are bottlenecks that impede further growth. For example, the step from innovative pilot projects to large-scale commercial applications is a bottleneck. In order to scale up and compete internationally, additional investments are needed: both financially and in manpower. There are also opportunities for the region to further differentiate itself, for example, in zero-liquid discharge solutions and the recovery of raw materials from wastewater.
