Technology that works for people, machines and the environment.

The Northern Netherlands has developed into a powerful region for high-tech systems and materials. Here, companies, knowledge institutions and governments work together on smart applications for industry, healthcare, space research and digitalization. Think of autonomous factory systems, neuromorphic computing, sensor technology and high-performance computing.

With ecosystems such as the Drachten Innovation Cluster, knowledge institutes like ASTRON, SRON and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, and players like Technologies Added and QDI Systems, the Northern Netherlands is among the four top HTSM regions in the Netherlands. This combination makes the region attractive for technology companies looking to grow.

Opportunities and challenges in the northern Netherlands

There are promising opportunities in autonomous systems, smart manufacturing, sustainable chip development and sensor technology. The Northern Netherlands is a European test area for autonomous systems through EDIH Northern Netherlands and is home to unique facilities such as Technologies Added's shared smart factory. Cooperation with sectors such as energy, water, chemistry and health also offers plenty of room for innovation.

The challenges include connecting fundamental research to concrete applications - for example, in medical technology, industrial monitoring or digital production chains. In addition, companies focusing on systems integration, embedded software and edge computing are needed. There is also a need for technical talent and venture capital for scale-up.
