The IT sector in the Northern Netherlands is booming, with more and more innovative companies strengthening the landscape. In and around Groningen you will find a strong ecosystem of innovative companies such as BelSimpel, Klippa, Simplicate, Payt and Voys. Entrepreneurs meet in networks such as Founded in the North, YES! and the Northern Online Entrepreneurs (NOO). Thanks to knowledge institutions such as CogniGron and the Bernoulli Institute, there is a solid base for talent and research.

IT companies describe the atmosphere among themselves as open and collaborative, with plenty of room for innovation. At the same time, there is still a lot of potential outside of Groningen. NOM is actively working to strengthen networks outside of Groningen so that companies there can also join the digital progress in the region.

Opportunities and challenges in the northern Netherlands

IT is not an island, but a driver of innovation in other sectors. In the Northern Netherlands, the opportunities lie mainly in those cross-pollinations: think AI in agriculture, digital twins in industry, smart learning solutions or cybersecurity in the energy sector. Neuromorphic technology, immersive learning, smart grids and green computing also offer plenty of opportunities for growth.

Yet there are also challenges. Many IT companies still focus on standard services, such as web development or ERP systems, while the region needs innovation. Outside Groningen, the connections to education and research are often weaker, making it more difficult to bring talent and entrepreneurship together.
