Bioprex Medical is developing an innovative antibacterial coating for medical implants. This coating kills bacteria that try to adhere to the implant, with the goal of preventing infections. Healthcare-associated infections are a serious problem: More than 70 percent of healthcare-associated infections are caused by medical devices. Bioprex Medical's mission is to reduce that number....

What was the reason for you to participate in the NOM Startup Program at the time?

This project had been playing at the university for a long time, a lot of time was spent on developing the right coating. In 2022 we founded Bioprex with the goal of bringing this coating to the market. At the time, we were very much looking for the steps to achieve an initial collaboration with a potential customer. Although we had mapped out the market and had a clear idea of the solution and the problem, we were not yet able to establish cooperation with a first customer. The NOM Startup Program was very helpful in further exploring the market and reaching potential customers.

How did you end up reaching the right target group?

Here we mainly used the underlying theory of the NOM Startup Program about, among other things, the problem-solution fit. What problem do we address? We delved deeper into that. We obviously address the problem of infections, but what are the triggers for our customers to want to work with us? We found out that infections are indeed a big problem for patients, but not for the medical device manufacturer. They have other interests. The coating can give medical device manufacturers a competitive advantage, which in turn can lead to more sales and/or market share. We have started to highlight this competitive advantage more in our approach to customers. We have learned to really listen to the sound of the customer, rather than the inventor with rose-colored glasses trying to sell his invention.

How is Bioprex Medical doing now? What stage are you in now and what is your outlook?

It's going well! Since the NOM Startup Program, we have achieved the first in-vivo results of our coating and demonstrated that our coating also works in living cells. Also, based on the customer conversations within the NOM Startup Program, we have good contact with a number of interested companies with whom we are discussing a potential collaboration. This year we hope to achieve a first collaboration.
