Groningen-based medtech startup Ameretat develops advanced AI solutions to support early detection of cancer during colonoscopy. With an advanced and easily integrated AI model, incipient polyps can be detected in real-time at an early stage, where the human eye sometimes falls short. Founder and CEO Setareh Rezaee participated in the NOM Startup Program.

Can you tell us about your startup and the stage your company was in when you started the NOM Startup Program

In the final year of my PhD, I began setting up Ameretat as a company and participated in the VentureLab program as well as various pitch competitions and startup contests. Through that, I also got to know people at NOM, and they pointed me toward the Startup Program.

What was your main reason for applying?

Validation is essential, but as a medtech startup, things often move more slowly than you’d like. It takes a lot of time to find the right contacts, connections, and partners, and I was looking for a way to do that in a well-structured manner. Participating in the Startup Program was perfect timing.

Which tracks did you follow?

So far only the first track on validation, but I plan to join the Investor Program as well.

What did you learn about validatng your startup?

That structure and a solid framework to work from are incredibly valuable, because they allow you to clearly demonstrate the steps you’ve taken. That’s also highly relevant information for potential investors.

Have you been able to apply what you learned? How did that go?

As a medtech startup, you naturally conduct fewer validation interviews than other types of startups, but I find the structured approach and methodology we learned very pleasant and practical to apply.

Is there anything you would do differently now thanks to the NOM Startup Program?

During the program, you learn how to validate your product in a uniform and structured way. It’s a method that has proven to work. If I hadn’t participated in the program, I would have had to reinvent the wheel myself in that regard.

Do you have tips for other founders?

There are always moments when it feels like you’re stuck, but that’s exactly when you need to look for creative solutions. In my case, for example, it was quite difficult to find the right contact details, so I built a tool to scrape that data from the internet. There’s always a way to solve challenges.

Would you recommend the NOM Startup Program - and if so, for what type of startup founder?

Absolutely. The quality of the program is very high, and beyond what you learn, you also receive a lot of personal support, practical advice on specific challenges you’re facing, and help finding the right contacts. Especially for early-stage startups, there’s really no reason not to participate.
