The Wageningen Plant Research location Valthermond is a pilot site of Wageningen University & Research where practice-oriented research is conducted on arable farming, green space management and field vegetables, with special attention to cultivation on peat-colonial valley soils. At trial farm 't Kompas (approximately 104 hectares), 'new' crops are grown, such as chicory and onions, in addition to the peat-colonial cropping plan, and modern infrastructure is available for field research and precision agriculture, including storage cells for storage trials, GPS techniques, irrigation facilities and a trial field sprayer with which several agents can be applied in a controlled way in one operation. Thus Valthermond offers unique opportunities to test innovations in cultivation systems, soil quality, biodiversity and new technologies directly in practice.
