Chemport Europe is the name of the green chemistry ecosystem in the Northern Netherlands. Chemport aims to be the leader in green Chemistry in Europe by 2030. To achieve this, companies, knowledge institutions and governments from the northern region are working together intensively. Chemport Europe provides greening and is expected to create more employment. By joining Fryslân and Heerenveen, the northern coverage is complete.
Circular plastics and recycling play a very important role in the greening of chemistry. Fryslân and Heerenveen are a welcome reinforcement of the ecosystem, given the expertise and activities in this field in Fryslân and especially around Heerenveen. Think for example of the NTCP (National Test Center Circular Plastics), the Plastic Sorting Plant, NedCam and Morssinkhof Plastics.
Chemport Europe as of now consists of the chemical clusters in Delfzijl and Emmen and recycling expertise around Heerenveen, some 120 companies in total. Complemented by a large knowledge cluster around the University of the North (MBO, HBO and WO) and the active role of provinces and municipalities, this ecosystem is working hard to make the process industry more sustainable and stronger. To this end, the transition to renewable non-fossil raw materials, the reduction of emissions and the use of renewable energy are the spearheads.
Henk Brink, chairman Chemport Europe: "We are very pleased with the accession of Fryslân and Heerenveen. This completes our northern coverage and makes the ecosystem even stronger. This is good for the activity within the ecosystem, and also internationally this gives it greater appeal."
Friso Douwstra, Deputy Provincial Executive of Fryslân: "Circular raw materials are the future and accelerate the greening of Fryslân. This is already being put into practice in Heerenveen. That is why we are joining Chemport Europe. The cooperation also offers opportunities for other developments, such as biomass and hydrogen."
Hedwich Rinkes, Heerenveen alderman: "The recycling of plastics is about strengthening cooperation on projects and building chains between regional companies and education. By participating in Chemport, we can share knowledge more actively and learn from each other.''
