Excellent connections by road, rail and inland waterways conveniently link the Northern Netherlands with the rest of our country, our European neighbors and with air and sea ports to the whole world.
Roads
Uncongested, well-maintained motorways connect the Northern Netherlands with the rest of the Netherlands and with Germany.
Rail
The Northern Netherlands has direct rail connections to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the Port of Rotterdam and to the Euroterminal rail terminal (business park border crossing with Germany), Groningen Rail Port and Friesland Rail Terminal.
Inland waterways
The main inland port in Meppel directly connects the Northern Netherlands to Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
Sea Ports
The Port of Rotterdam, which is the world’s third largest seaport, is easily accessible from the Northern Netherlands by road, rail and inland waterway. Our local coastline is home to three more of our country’s biggest seaports: Eemshaven, Delfzijl and Harlingen.
Airports
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s biggest business hubs, is reached within 2 hours from the Northern Netherlands. Locally, we are also served by the international Groningen Eelde Airport.
