The clothing industry is known for its rapid turnover, high runs and large waste streams. Groningen clothing atelier Kleerlijk, run by entrepreneurs Daniek Feddema and Erwin Miedema, proves that fashion can be more sustainable and social. By producing clothing on demand and in small runs, the company prevents overproduction and waste. Moreover, the atelier offers employment opportunities to people distanced from the labor market. Thanks to funding from the Groninger Growth Fund and Rabo Foundation, Kleerlijk is taking the next step in its growth.
Local production with social impact
The duo is starting Kleerlijk after a successful launch of Erwin's own clothing brand, Rolánn. The brand's production takes place in the Netherlands, but the quality lags behind. Thereupon, Erwin and Daniek decided to start their own clothing atelier. Daniek: "We wanted to bring the craft of making clothes back to the Netherlands. That not only provides employment, but is also more sustainable. Erwin and I look at the clothing industry and overconsumption in the same way: too much is made and too much is bought.' Kleerlijk's team now consists of 18 people, including experienced tailors from different cultural backgrounds. The company supplies local customers such as Paradigm and FC Groningen, as well as smaller brands from the Randstad. Kleerlijk is growing rapidly and that growth requires a next step.
Investing in technology and efficiency
To further professionalize production and make it scalable, the company wants to invest in digitization and automation. This includes specialized design software, a new sewing machine, and an advanced cutting machine. These investments will make processes more efficient, sustainable, and future-proof. GroBusiness, the province of Groningen’s business support center, has been involved with this innovative company for some time and put Daniek and Erwin in touch with the Groningen Growth Fund to discuss this funding request. In collaboration with co-financier Rabo Foundation, an organization that supports social initiatives, the funding was successfully finalized earlier this year. Thanks to this investment, Kleerlijk can continue to grow, strengthen its position in the fashion industry, and at the same time contribute to a more sustainable and socially responsible production process. Investment manager Gijs Vermeer: “Kleerlijk demonstrates that with a solid plan, you can not only grow your business but also operate in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. We are happy to contribute to the realization of such growth plans.” We maintain close ties with the entrepreneurs we support. For example, Kleerlijk recently supplied the shirts for our regional fund-raising event. A great example of collaboration in action.
