Pioneer in 100% silicon anode technology for next-gen batteries starts pilot production in Europe
GDI, a global leader in 100% silicon anodes for advanced lithium-ion battery technology, today announced the successful completion of a major follow-on round of Series A funding. This round was led by Helios Climate Ventures, Impact NY and InnoEnergy, supplemented by co-financing in the form of a market-based convertible loan on behalf of the Province of Groningen and the Ministry of Economic Affairs through BSA. More than $11.5 million was raised from existing and new investors, bringing the total amount of GDI's Series A funding to date above $20 million.
This strategic capital injection accelerates GDI's mission to scale up production of its breakthrough 100% silicon anodes. This will leverage supply chains in Europe and the United States, contributing to energy independence, resilient supply chains and jobs.
"This milestone enables us to enter the next phase in our journey to transform the global battery industry," said Rob Anstey, founder and CEO of GDI. "We are advancing more than just battery technology, as batteries impact every aspect of our lives: from consumer electronics and medical devices to defense and electric mobility. We are building resilience, prosperity, national security and a sustainable energy future."
With this latest round of investment, GDI has started pilot production in the Netherlands with a capacity of 300 kWh. This positions the company as a world leader in the production of 100% silicon anodes. The European headquarters will be located in Groningen, the Netherlands - strategically located in the heart of the EU energy and innovation ecosystem.
"We are investing in forward-thinking technologies that are moving the world forward," said Josh Grehan, Principal at Helios Climate Ventures. "GDI's scalable, domestic solution for 100% silicon anodes aligns perfectly with our mission to combine climate impact and financial return. Their ability to deliver a better battery without increasing costs is revolutionary. We are excited about their partnerships in defense, medical technology, consumer products and automotive."
"GDI's technology not only improves battery performance but also addresses Europe's strategic battery needs," said Jacob Ruiter, CEO Benelux of InnoEnergy. "By combining deep scientific innovation with a clear route to large-scale production, GDI is building the foundation of battery value chains in both Europe and the US. They are accelerating a cleaner, more resilient energy system on both sides of the Atlantic."
"The establishment of GDI contributes to the policy vision of the Province of Groningen and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, focused on a knowledge-intensive economy, and closely matches the objectives of Nij Begun's Economic Agenda," said Sytze Hellinga of NOM. "We are proud to welcome GDI's European headquarters to Groningen."
Accelerating the silicon revolution in batteries
GDI's patented 100% silicon anode technology solves three longstanding obstacles to commercialization of silicon in batteries:
- Limited cycle-life due to uncontrolled expansion
- Safety risks from silicon powder and lithium dendrite formation
- Scalability and high production costs
GDI's solution enables the following:
- More than 30% higher energy density
- Charging in less than 15 minutes
- Secure supply chain based on materials and equipment from the U.S. and Europe
- Compatibility with existing large-scale solar and glass production equipment
- Direct integration into existing battery production
A safe, domestic and sustainable replacement for graphite
Current graphite anodes have major limitations: lower energy density, environmental problems and a dependence on China for more than 90% of critical battery materials. GDI's silicon technology offers a cleaner, more efficient and geopolitically resilient alternative.
Strong partnerships for scalable manufacturing
GDI works with AGC Plasma Technology Solutions to develop efficient, large-scale roll-to-roll coaters - an essential step toward industrial production. Schlenk SE, a leading global foil manufacturer, will supply the copper alloy substrate essential for GDI's anodes.
With 31 global patents, GDI is at the forefront of battery innovation, poised to enable the future of consumer electronics, defense applications, medical devices and e-mobility.
"The future of lithium-ion anodes is silicon - and GDI is making that future scalable, performance-based and affordable," said Anstey. "This round of funding is a powerful vote of confidence from investors who fully understand and support our vision and technology."
BSA stands for Budget (international) Strategic Acquisition, a public financial facility linked to Nij Begun, implemented by NOM and managed in cooperation between the Province of Groningen and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The purpose of BSA is to attract international companies with strategic added value for the regional economy of Groningen and North Drenthe with financial support.
