The number of companies involved in games for the healthcare sector is rising sharply. A true gaming industry in the area of healthy ageing has recently emerged in the Northern Netherlands. The sector provides several hundred jobs.
Grendel Games in Leeuwarden, for example, is working with University Medical Centre Groningen and healthcare insurance company Friesland Zorgverzekeraar on various games in the care sector. Next month will see the release of a game in which surgeons can use the Nintendo Wii to practice their fine motor skills for operations. The company in Leeuwarden is also working on a game in which children with a non-congenital brain injury can practice keeping their balance. Grendel Games will shortly be joining a number of other companies on a trade mission to China.
Mad Multimedia is becoming well known in Groningen. The company works for organizations including Gasunie and Noordhoff publishing. GameAcademy, a platform for serious gaming in the Northern Netherlands, sees ample opportunities. Multinationals such as Philips and FrieslandCampina in particular are looking for ways of using games to motivate employees or improve production processes.
