The Biobased Industries Consortium (BIC), a cross sector group of 48 large and small companies, has joined forces with the European Commission to set up an unprecedented Public-Private Partnership worth €3.8 billion to accelerate the deployment of biobased products in Europe by 2020.

The promise of a 200 million euro European subsidy has taken the building of a large biofuel plant at Chemiepark in Delfzijl a step closer. The newspaper Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the granting of the subsidy will be announced next week. A total sum of 700 million euros is being invested in the plant. The plant will provide 200 new jobs.
Yesterday Dagblad van het Noorden reported that Sugar factory SuikerUnie in Groningen's Hoogkerk starting using a biomass digester which will be producing ten million cubic meters of gas a year.
The Groningen-based company BioBTX has succeeded in extracting three important building blocks for plastic from biomass. That was reported by the Dagblad van het Noorden. The substances are benzene, toluene and xylene, collectively known as BTX. These basic chemicals for many plastics are currently made using fossil materials, primarily mineral oil.
