On 2 October 2012, Stichting IJkdijk and the consortium Nelen-Schuurmans and Fugro sign an agreement to build the Dijk Data Service Center. The Dijk Data Service Center (DDSC) will ensure that dyke managers have easier access to data that represent the condition of a number of Dutch dykes. Building the DDSC is an important element of the IJkdijk development program 2012-2014.

From 24 September, part of the Ommelanderzeedijk north of Delfzijl will be fitted with innovative sensors in the framework of the LiveDijk XL Noorderzijlvest project. With this Dyke Monitoring and Conditioning system (DMC), the dyke can soon be monitored from the inside and the alarm can be raised quicker when the dyke weakens. Furthermore, the sensors provide data that can be used to design stronger dykes and to improve their management.

Entirely according to plan, three test dikes collapsed at the IJkdijk test location in Bad Nieuweschans (Groningen) on 26 and 27 August and 8 September. A preliminary analysis of the results has shown that the sensor systems predict the dike breaches well in advance.

Between 2007 and 2010 Stichting IJkdijk conducted groundbreaking experiments in dike monitoring with the aid of sensor technology. The project got worldwide exposure. The time has now come for the next stage of the IJkdijk development programme. In August and
September experiments will be performed to establish whether the various sensor systems can predict the failure of a dike and provide vital support for dike maintenance and management.

During the two-day Sensor Universe conference in the WTC Expo Centre in Leeuwarden, there will be plenty of attention for so-called 'smart farming'. The Northern IJkakker project is working on a technology in which farmers can receive information from sensors on their computer or smart phone, so that they know for example, precisely when a product can be harvested or can see whether the fertiliser percentage in the soil is correct. The workshops at the conference are bound to attract great attention.
