The Northern Netherlands is an emerging energy hotspot, due to the realization of a number of energy generation plants in Eemshaven. In the near future, a total capacity of 7,500 MW will be generated in a power mix of both renewable (green) and fossil energy. Either energy derived from gas or coal fired generation plants, or green energy, such as biomass or wind turbines, will be supplied by several providers and thus creating a secure power supply for business consumers.

The chemical industry in the Northern Netherlands comprises two clusters. One cluster (Delfzijl) is based on salt and gas and the other cluster (Emmen) is based on plastics and polymers. The main focus is cost sharing and greening raw materials.

Food technology is of vital importance to the Northern Netherlands. It forms an important pillar of the regional economy. With its abundant arable farming, the region has always been a major producer of raw products for the food industry and aquaculture. The products include sugar beets, potatoes, milk (and all of its derivative products) and grains. This makes the Northern Netherlands exceptionally attractive to companies with activities based on the ingredients produced by agro-processors. Offshore Wind is becoming an increasingly important factor in the production of renewable energy. A huge increase in installed capacity on the North Sea will be emerging in the coming years. The United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark are developing multiple offshore windparks that will produce thousands of Megawatt (MW) of electricity. The Netherlands is also making a contribution with an ambition of 6000 MW of installed capacity by 2020.
