Background
Transcom Nederland got in touch with NOM for the first time in 1999. At that time, it was an internationally operating call center organization with a branch in Amsterdam. However, the business climate in the capital did not meet the expectations. One of the problems was that the labour potential was clearly inadequate, while Transcom needed a lot of new members of staff: some 500 in total. That is why the the company decided to focus on North Netherlands: because of the wide availability of staff, but also because of its acclaimed work ethos. Moreover, the rent in North Netherlands, as well as the salaries, are slightly lower than in the rest of the country. These are important factors for cost-driven organizations such as Transcom.

Question: We are looking for a suitable location and sufficient staff for our call center organization. What can the Northern Netherlands offer us?

The first steps
Staff turnover is relatively high in the call center sector. This meant that more people were required to arrive at the number of 500 needed. On the basis of an estimate of the availability of staff, NOM was able to guarantee Transcom that this requirement could be met. A recruitment campaign was started in collaboration with organizations such as the Employment Policy Office. This provoked an overwhelming response. Transcom then decided to move to North Netherlands permanently. After a survey of the regional property market, a number of locations were suggested to the company. Transcom decided to choose Zernike Science Park, a business park on the north side of the city of Groningen.

End phase and result
In October 2000 Transcom rented a building of 2600 m². The company continued to develop rapidly. NOM advised it to look beyond Groningen in the North in order to achieve its further growth ambitions, and so spread the risks and find suitable staff. Soon after, in 2007, Transcom relocated to new premises in Emmen. Since then, a lot has changed within the company. For example, Transcom's services portfolio has been expanded considerably with services such as its Business Process Outsourcing Services (BPO). Transcom and North Netherlands have clearly found each other.
