RWE/Essent to burn more biomass in Eemshaven energy plant

RWE/Essent has indicated in Dagblad van het Noorden that it wants to burn more biomass in the energy plant under construction in Eemshaven. The plant has been designed to run on biomass for 15 %, but according to Nina Skorupska, member of the Executive Board of RWE and responsible for technical matters, this can be increased to 35 % by 2020.

Skorupska explains that the energy plant in Eemshaven will be "flexible", which means that it will be relatively easy to change to a different mixture of coal and wood compacted into pellets. Moreover, RWE/Essent has already gained experience of increasing the percentage of biomass at the Amer plant near Geertruidenberg. At the Amer plant, biomass now accounts for 35 % of the fuel used, and the energy company aims to increase that to 50 % in due course.
The energy plant in Eemshaven will be ready to start generating energy by 2014, provided that it will have all the required permits by then. If the test results for burning pellets along with other fuel are positive, and if the State upholds the announced obligation for energy companies to produce a certain percentage of sustainable energy, the percentage of biomass used as fuel will gradually increase.
