Gasunie and Greenpeace combine forces in 'windgas'

Greenpeace Energy and Gasunie will be combining forces in the area of ‘windgas’. This technology involves converting wind energy into hydrogen gas that can be distributed via the gas network. This will make it possible to store surpluses of wind energy for later use and will prevent the electricity network from being overburdened.

The electricity is used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen by means of electrolysis. The hydrogen is mixed with the natural gas present in the gas network.
The natural gas infrastructure functions as a storage medium for wind energy. This means that the stored energy can be used when there is not much wind.
