Healthy Ageing of vital importance for Dutch economy

The theme of Healthy Ageing - one of the focal points of the Northern economy - is of vital importance to the Dutch economy. Research into healthy ageing, as is done within the Healthy Ageing project of UMCG, the Medical Center of the University of Groningen, can yield billions of Euros to the Dutch treasury each year. That is the conclusion of the economic researcher Dr. Marc Pomp.

The economist Marc Pomp has calculated that the increase in care expenses poses a greater threat to the economy than the current financial crisis. According to CPB, the Central Planning Bureau, the costs of care may rise to a quarter of the gross domestic product by 2050, which means that care will become unaffordable.
According to the economist, it is important to make major investments in Healthy Ageing, so that people are able to stay healthy longer, are able to work longer, and are making use of medical provisions for a shorter period of time. As a result, 150,000 more people will continue to work in 2050.
Marc Pomp's research will be offered to Bernard Wientjes, chair of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers in the North, on Thursday.
