Transshipment record after good year for Groningen Seaports
Groningen Seaports has had an excellent year. A record volume of goods was transshipped in the port last year: 8 million tons. In 2010 that was 7.6 million tons. The annual figures also show that the allocation of sites rose from 25.7 hectares in 2010 to 28.97 hectares in 2010. However, the port authority has downgraded the prognoses for 2012.
Due to the financial and economic situation in the Netherlands and Europe, many companies are reluctant to make investments. Seaports will nevertheless continue to invest. "The costs exceed the benefits," says Harm Post, Director. In order to facilitate all the developments now and in the future, Groningen Seaports will continue to invest at the same level in the infrastructure in and around the ports.
An important new player is the company Orange Blue Terminals (OBT), which takes advantage of the key position Eemshaven is beginning to have in the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms. In Delfzijl the Revitalizing Oosterhorn project, which involved millions of Euros, was completed. This involved the large-scale improvement of the infrastructure in the Oosterhornhaven area. The restoration of the former village of Weiwerd has also started. In the industrial area of Delfzijl, two new players have laid the first stone for the construction of their new company: Eneco and Ensartech.
